😝 I'm kind of giddy at the moment because I did it. Sure, I probably broke every rule about learning how to knit...except the universal rule of "You don't know until you Try." And I did try...I tried very hard. And so no one else has to go through the migraine inducing poop-fest that was my life a couple weeks ago, here's my design pattern for a lovely shawl inspired to look like Kyojuro Rengoku's cape.
You're welcome...

Download Chart from Stitch Fiddle
It was adapted from the knitting pattern Vacation by Donna Pick. So you work from the sides around instead of top-down.
Here are the major changes/Notes:
- The entire shawl is done in garter stitch for my pattern. (If you prefer stockinette stitch, then make sure you use purl stitches on the Wrong Side Rows.)
- The color changes are done using the Intarsia technique.
- When I turn my work for short rows, I use the German Short Row technique.
- The color chart was made for Worsted Yarn. It would need to be adapted to fit bulky or thinner yarn. I used the recommendations for needle size, yarn size and cast on number from the Vacation pattern. Use that as a reference if you want to adapt the pattern.
- I don't know the gauge. 😓 Sorry. Hopefully it will block similarly to how the Vacation pattern looks.
- If some of the color changes look weird or off...I apologize...still tweaking, but it can be "fixed in post" so to speak with Duplicate Stitching.
- Make as many "wedges" as you need to make a half circle.
- I used the crochet cast technique for all cast on instructions. For the initial cast on, I chained color changes. All others will only be in red.
- You can change the length of the flame points by casting on more or fewer than the suggested stitches. But you will have to move the short rows around too.
- To make the pattern a bit cleaner and perhaps a bit easier, you can just knit in white and red. Convert all yellow stitches to white and follow the pattern. You could probably dye parts of the white yarn later or paint it. (I don't think it will affect the red yarn but I don't know...I haven't experimented yet.)
Materials
- Worsted Weight Yarn (Weight 4) in Red, Yellow/Gold, White (I used Caron Simply Soft...because I'm cheap and learning. It's acrylic yarn.)
- US 10 - 6mm Circular Needles at least 24" long (61cm)
- Crochet Hook H/8 5 mm
- Needle toppers for taking bento breaks
- Flame Breathing First Form...Unknowing Flame
- Stitch Counters are super helpful
And here's the Written out pattern.
Legend/Key:
White: Knit White
Yellow: Knit Yellow
Red: Knit Red
Double Stitch: German Short Row Turn

First few rows |
Repeat rows 2 - 51 for every wedge.
First Wedge. |
Bind off the edge of the last wedge.
I did kind of mess up some of my counting on this first wedge. I tell you a stitch counter is VERY helpful especially around the color changes. Oh...I also learned how to do the color changes "properly" much later. I'll need to fix the odd portions in post.I'm hoping to finish in a couple of MONTHS or something. 😵😜😅😭
